The
Casting Process | ||
|
Step 1 A pattern is created to be cast. If an impression is used, a wax pattern must be made from it first. |
| |
| Step
2 Special wax is poured into the impression and allowed to cool. |
| |
| Step 3 The wax cast is removed from the impression. Then it is cleaned and trimmed into shape. |
| |
| Step 4 The wax pattern is then molded using the greensand method. Here a mold has been made for a cat head gate latch. The 4 piece iron pattern is on the table in the foreground. The 2 piece casting flask is behind it. The cope is the top half standing up on edge in the back. The drag is the bottom half resting on the table. The two halves of the casting flask are put together and ready for molten metal.
|
| |
| Step 5 The foundry is fired up!
|
|
|
| Step 6 The molten metal is poured as a prayer is said. |
| |
| Step 7 After the metal has cooled sufficiently, the flask is opened and the metal is cut, ground, and polished. |
